Building consistent, responsive patterns for 350,000+ business customers

Challenge

RingCentral’s cloud-based business communication platform served hundreds of thousands of enterprise customers across mobile, tablet, desktop, and web applications. As the product rapidly expanded with new features (video conferencing, SMS, call routing, integrations), maintaining consistent user experiences across all platforms became increasingly complex. Each device had unique constraints and interaction paradigms, but users expected seamless transitions between platforms.

  • My Role: UI/UX Designer
  • Team: Director of UX, Design Team, Engineering, Marketing

Approach

Understanding cross-platform complexity I analyzed existing patterns across mobile (iOS, Android), tablet, and desktop applications to identify inconsistencies and gaps. The challenge wasn’t just making interfaces look similar—it was ensuring interaction patterns made sense for each platform’s unique context while maintaining conceptual consistency.

Designing scalable, device-appropriate patterns

For each new feature flow introduced to the platform, I was responsible for:

  • Designing responsive patterns that adapted intelligently across screen sizes
  • Ensuring interaction models aligned with platform conventions (touch vs. mouse, mobile gestures vs. keyboard shortcuts)
  • Maintaining visual and behavioral consistency where it mattered most to users
  • Creating documentation that helped engineers implement patterns correctly

Contributing to the design system

I worked closely with the Director of UX and other designers to evolve our UI kits for each platform. This involved:

  • Identifying reusable components from new feature work
  • Documenting interaction specifications and edge cases
  • Creating guidelines for when to use existing patterns vs. create new ones
  • Collaborating with marketing to ensure consistency extended to external touchpoints

Solution

Comprehensive UI kits and interaction patterns that:

  • Enabled consistent feature deployment across mobile, tablet, desktop, and web
  • Provided clear guidance for device-specific adaptations
  • Reduced design and engineering time for new features
  • Ensured brand consistency across product and marketing
